The meeting space |
The main design concept is to create the sense of functionality on Louis Sullivan's monument and sense of surprise on Oscar Niemeyer's monument in terms of structure and texture. Then, the meeting space acts as a physical meeting point where two monuments meet structurally, and a metaphorical meeting point where each concepts meet and coexist as a long pathway.
To convey the functionality on the Sullivan's monument, I applied the concept of floors to the monument which is inspired by today's conventional buildings. Then, the sense of functionality is extended by the functional details such as stairs which connect each floors, and glass fences around the edges of each floors.
On the Niemeyer's monument, the sense of surprise that is clearly demonstrated in its structural design is emphasised by the interplay of different textures.
At the meeting space, the concept of functionality from Sullivan's monument extends as a functional bridges, and the concept of surprise from Niemeyer's monument extends as interplays of textures. Therefore, the concepts metaphorically 'flow' between the monuments instead of staying in each monuments.
